Katherine Chen (she/her)
Massage Parlor Outreach Project
“I worked with MPOP (Massage Parlor Outreach Project), a grassroots organization working to support Asian migrant massage workers and sex workers in Seattle.
As part of my internship, I created Know Your Rights resources on police raids of massage parlors (best practices before, during, and after raids).
We were also able to have a lawyer in attendance to answer any questions, as well as an organizer involved in stripper and sex worker rights.
I also created ten KYR cards in English and Mandarin as a way for non-English speaking Mandarin speakers to assert their rights by showing the cards to police in any potential encounters. “

“I got to work a lot with their Contract Enforcement team, working to keep UW to the contract and respecting the negotiated rights of our members. I was also involved in the bargaining of the new ASE contract, I’m happy to say it passed a delivered a 36% raise to our salaried ASEs and an 18% raise to hourly ASEs, and it feels really good to report back to members and explain all the things our union has been able to win for our members. “

Tacoma For All
“I'm an Ethnic, Gender, and Labor Studies major from the Tacoma campus. This quarter I got to work with Tacoma For All, an organization that passed the Tenant Bill of Rights as a city initiative in Tacoma in December. This initiative provided renters in Tacoma with some of the strongest protections against rent increases and evictions in the State of Washington. They are currently working on passing a similar initiative, the Workers Bill of Rights, which would raise the minimum wage in our city and provide scheduling protections for workers, among other things.”
